”I was working with the Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland 20 minutes from Washington DC. VLBI is an astronomical technique for making maps of radio stars using multiple radio telescopes. VLBI is the highest precision technique for making measurements on tectonic plate motion and the rotation of the earth.
During my tenure I developed data simulation software to verify the operations of one analysis program that is used for calibrating radio telescopes. While using my software we found bugs in its functionality and I fixed some of them. I programmed in Python, which I was not familiar with before this intern- ship. However, this was no problem. I learned some before my arrival, but I was also given some time during the start of the internship to learn some more.”

”At work we settled in fairly quickly,
with a few opening meetings and some
administrative paperwork we got started.
My task was to create a web interface
for a performance benchmarking tool in
a subset of a larger project group. This
included both design, implementation and
testing of the user interface.
Not having any previous
experience of web
programming languages
I found the task both
challenging and intriguing
and by the end of the
summer the knowledge I
did gain felt very rewarding.
On my spare time in
Boston I spent a lot of
time with Oskar, Andreas
and Jonas. We
tried to plan something
every week and by the
end of the summer we
had a long list of things
we’d done. Some of the
things were going to a
red sox game at Fenway,
an American football
game at Gillette stadium,
that by the way can hold
65, 000 people! We also
spent midsummer and independence
day together,
took road trips to IKEA,
went sightseeing, went to
the movies or went to the beach when the
weather was nice enough. We also made
some outings together with my roommates
and co-workers.
To all of you that contributed to making
my summer one of the most memorable
ones I might ever have, I thank you.”
”Although I knew my project for the summer would be to construct an antenna, details had been pretty scarce and I was eager to be briefed for further details. It turned out that things weren't particularly specified yet and that I was very welcome to come up with ideas on an antenna that was supposed to fit in a radio for the logging industry.
A few features were mentioned, among others the concept of an auto tuneable antenna. For those not familiar with the term, imagine a scenario where you try to tune in to your favorite radio station: You tune the radio and get the good reception; they are even playing your favourite song. When you walk across the room, you realize that you can hardly hear the song because of the noise. You go back, just to realiza the reception is now great again; the problem might be that you tune your radio to include yourself as an active element in it which we usually don't want. My mission this summer was to solve that problem for you.”
”From what I had read and heard from previous CETAC members, working as an intern, you are most commonly appointed a certain task with which you work, for the whole period of your internship. In my case, this has been the direct opposite. I have worked on projects ranging from the creation of material to support business cases, create presentations, do concepting and prototyping, as well as field testing. Doing work within all these different areas, I have been given a greater picture of the whole process of the phases involved in taking an idea from the drawing board to a finished product. And with the talented set of individuals in the team, my time spent on different projects have been very rewarding, and there has always been someone around to ask for help when need be.
I have had the chance to meet and work with very kind and greatly talented people from who I have learnt a lot. I have also had the chance to meet a lot of new friends outside of work who have made my stay here most pleasant.”
